Italy Expects Record Cruise Passengers Amidst New Port Setback

Italy is anticipating a record 15 million cruise passengers this year, even as a planned €600 million cruise port near Rome has been blocked. The Fiumicino-Isola Sacra project, intended to accommodate 1.3 million visitors annually, was rejected by authorities who cited environmental impact concerns and disputed its classification as a tourist marina. The company behind the project plans to appeal the court's decision.

Despite this setback, Italy's established cruise ports continue to attract visitors, offering access to numerous historical and scenic attractions. Civitavecchia serves as the primary port for travelers visiting Rome, located approximately an hour away. The capital city offers iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum and the Pantheon, as well as Vatican City.

Along Tuscany's west coast, Livorno is a port city known for its 16th-century canals and Renaissance fortresses. It also serves as a gateway to Florence, which is about a 90-minute journey from the port.

For those wishing to visit Venice, Porto Marghera is the closest port. Large cruise liners have been prohibited from sailing through Venice's city center since 2021 to aid in preservation efforts. Venice itself draws millions of tourists annually for its canals and historic architecture.

In northwestern Italy, Genoa provides access to the Italian Riviera. Its city center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features landmarks like the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. The port is a short walk from the main town area, and pebbled beaches are also nearby. Historic architecture in Genoa

The port of Naples is a strategic starting point for exploring ancient historical sites. Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, and the Roman town of Herculaneum are easily accessible. Additionally, ferries from Naples connect to destinations like Capri and Sorrento. Ancient ruins near Naples

Salerno offers convenient access to the Amalfi Coast, reachable by a roughly 35-minute ferry ride. Popular towns on the coast include Ravello and Positano, known for their whitewashed buildings and local cuisine. Naples is also a 35-minute train journey from Salerno.
