Influencer Leaves Dubai After Business Halts Amid Regional Unrest
A British social media manager describes fearing for her life during Iranian strikes and the subsequent financial impact on her career in the UAE.
The allure of Dubai has faded for some British expatriates, including social media influencer Alisha Tyler, who was forced to return to the UK after regional unrest significantly impacted her business. Tyler, 27, who moved to the UAE six years ago, described her experiences in a BBC documentary, "Dubai: Is the Dream Over?"
Tyler recounted the moment she first heard Iranian missiles striking the UAE, an experience that shook her perception of the city. "The thoughts running through my head were, 'I'm a human, I want to enjoy life, I don't want to die'," she said. She admitted that she had not previously associated Dubai with the Middle East, viewing it as a separate, distinct world. Alerts were issued, urging residents to take shelter, leading to school closures and a shift to remote work for many.
Despite the immediate threat, Tyler initially maintained a relaxed demeanor, even while her family urged her to leave. However, the broader geopolitical situation had a tangible effect on her livelihood. "My work did massively slow down, and I think it just came to a halt for me where I had to make a decision, and be like, financially, right now I shouldn't be staying here," she explained. This financial downturn ultimately led her to leave Dubai, joining an estimated 30,000 Britons who have departed the region following the conflict.
The UK government updated its travel advice for the UAE in June, citing the unpredictable nature of the situation. While business operations in Dubai have since recovered, the incident has raised questions about the city's long-term reputation for stability and safety among international residents and businesses. Tyler described the return to the UK as lonely but expressed a determination to adjust. "I'm getting there," she stated.
