IKEA unveils 12-piece Gustaf Westman VINTERFINT collection, heads to Australia Sept. 29
Whimsical tableware and home objects — including a meatball plate and spiral vase — form a limited-edition holiday set designed to rework tradition with playful colours and shapes
IKEA has revealed a 12-piece limited-edition holiday collection created with Swedish designer Gustaf Westman that the retailer says will join its annual VINTERFINT Christmas line-up and arrive in Australian stores from Sept. 29.
The range, premiered in Seoul on Sept. 9, reinterprets familiar seasonal motifs with bold colours, sculptural shapes and wavy silhouettes. IKEA and Westman described the pieces as designed to celebrate food and togetherness while offering a modern, playful take on traditional holiday decor.
The 12-piece offering spans porcelain tableware, candleholders and lighting. Standout items include a meatball plate created as a nod to IKEA’s iconic Swedish meatball, a spiral “bouncy” vase formed from a single metal coil that holds a separate glass vessel, and porcelain dining plates with a square outer form and a soft round well at the centre designed to fit together like mosaic pieces. A cup-and-saucer set for glögg (mulled wine) features an intentionally oversized saucer intended to hold biscuits alongside the cup.
Other pieces in the collection include candlesticks available in two colours paired with square-and-round porcelain candle holders that echo the plate shapes, a portable rechargeable lantern with a layered round body that opens into a larger orbital form, and a modern candelabra-style window lamp inspired by traditional Swedish holiday lights.
"For me, this was an opportunity to take traditional holiday decor aesthetics and turn it on its head, instead introducing a sense of playfulness and boldness," Westman said in a statement. "This is my interpretation of the holidays; it's a new design for a new generation."
Maria O'Brian, IKEA Range Identity Leader, said the partnership was intended to reimagine seasonal celebrations "in a way that feels more modern, joyful and inclusive — without forgetting the spirit of tradition." She added that Westman’s approach "feels very true to IKEA, but he challenges conventions in a bold, expressive way. We are thrilled to make the work of such an exciting designer accessible to a wider audience."
Westman, known for his Curvy Mirror, said the collection seeks to balance humour and function. He described the spiral vase as an example of "a rounded form" that "has no clear ending, which I think gives an object more life," and noted the meatball plate was intended as a simple, celebratory nod to a Swedish holiday staple.
IKEA cautioned that stock will be limited and advised shoppers to move quickly. The retailer did not disclose global or Australia-specific production quantities in its public announcement.
The collaboration marks Gustaf Westman’s first product design partnership with another company. It arrives amid continued retailer interest in limited-edition designer collaborations intended to generate seasonal demand and drive traffic to stores and online platforms.
