IBM Shares Plummet in Historic One-Day Drop Amid AI Boom Shifts

IBM shares experienced their worst one-day fall in more than 100 years of trading on Tuesday, with the tech giant losing over £50 billion in market value. The company's stock fell more than 25% in early New York trading, a decline that threatened to surpass the previous record drop of 23% set on Black Monday in 1987. This significant slump, the largest since IBM listed on the stock market in 1915, reduced the company's valuation to £151 billion.

The sharp decline followed an internal warning from IBM that profits had been impacted by a shift in corporate spending. Businesses are reportedly moving away from the types of software IBM specializes in, favoring servers, storage, and memory products in anticipation of price increases driven by the artificial intelligence boom. IBM chief executive Arvind Krishna acknowledged the company's misstep, stating, “What played out was worse than our expectations. We did not adapt and move quickly enough.”

The warning had a ripple effect across the software sector, with analysts noting the significant impact on IBM and other software stocks. Chris Beauchamp of IG Group commented on the situation, calling it “an ugly moment for IBM and software stocks” and raising questions about the duration of this spending shift.
