Hot Dog on a Stick Set for Major Expansion Under New Ownership
The 80-year-old chain, known for its corn dogs and hand-stomped lemonade, plans to expand beyond malls with new locations in Las Vegas and other markets.
Hot Dog on a Stick, the nearly 80-year-old chain recognized for its hand-stomped lemonade and corn dogs, is poised for significant expansion following its acquisition by Las Vegas-based Amazing Brands. The deal, valued at $8 million, signals a new chapter for the brand, aiming to broaden its reach beyond its traditional mall food court locations.
Amazing Brands intends to introduce the California-based classic to a wider audience across the United States and potentially globally. Plans include establishing a flagship location on the Las Vegas Strip, incorporating drive-thrus, and opening eateries in amusement parks and stadiums. The company also aims to develop packaged versions of its signature items for grocery and retail markets.
"While Hot Dog on a Stick has been predominantly a West Coast success story, we believe the time has come to bring it to the rest of America—and ultimately to the world," stated Stephen Siegel, founder of Amazing Brands, in comments to QSR magazine. He emphasized that the goal is to preserve the brand's heritage while investing in future growth, not to reinvent it.
Launched on the Santa Monica Pier in 1946 as Party Puffs by Dave Barham, the eatery was renamed Hot Dog on a Stick after Barham perfected his signature item. The chain grew to over 100 locations, primarily in shopping malls, where employees became known for their distinctive red, white, and blue striped uniforms. However, with the decline of traditional indoor malls, the brand's footprint contracted, leaving 44 locations currently in operation.
Siegel, who expressed a personal connection to the brand, having grown up with it, noted that its appeal lies in the strong sense of nostalgia and emotion it evokes. The expansion strategy targets diverse venues, from entertainment districts and tourist destinations to freestanding small-format restaurants, aiming to connect with a new generation of customers.
