Heatwave and World Cup Fever Drive Retail Sales Surge

Retail sales experienced a significant boost in June, with a 1% increase attributed to a prolonged heatwave and widespread enthusiasm for the World Cup. Official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that consumer spending has now risen for two consecutive months.

The warm weather prompted a surge in demand for seasonal items such as air conditioning units, outdoor products, and summer clothing, with air conditioning units reportedly selling out across the country. Internet retailers also saw substantial growth, driven by promotions and the favorable weather conditions. Sports merchandise was another strong performer online.

"Retail sales grew again in the latest quarter," stated ONS senior statistician Hannah Finselbach. "Internet retailers did especially well, with businesses telling us that this was because of promotions and the warm weather, with strong demand in June for outdoor products, air conditioning and clothing. Sports merchandise also sold well online."

The proportion of online sales has reached its highest point since the spring of 2021, coinciding with the easing of coronavirus restrictions. This trend highlights a shift towards e-commerce, further accelerated by current shopping habits.

Revised figures indicate that retail sales in May increased by 1.2%, and the previously reported 0.7% fall in April was a downward revision from an initial 1% decrease. Cumulatively, sales between April and June are estimated to have risen by 0.6% compared to the first quarter of the year.

Kien Tan, Senior Retail Adviser at PwC UK, commented on the trend, noting that "a second month in a row of heatwaves and both England and Scotland's performances in the group stages of the World Cup lifted consumer confidence." Retailers responded with timely sales and promotions to encourage spending, which contributed to a reported dip in inflation. This positive momentum benefited the entire retail sector, with increased spending observed across various categories, from barbecue items to summer apparel and outdoor leisure goods.

However, the exceptionally warm June also presented challenges, discouraging shoppers from visiting physical high street stores. While footfall declined during the month, online retailers capitalized on the situation, experiencing the most substantial sales gains. Official figures also suggest World Cup fever grabbed shoppers as retail sales surged by 1 per cent in June Businesses reported that volumes were up for the second month running as temperatures soared. Clothing and footwear had a strong performance.
