Heating Oil Costs More Than Double Ahead of Winter, Rural Households Face Financial Strain
Residents in areas without natural gas supply are seeing significant price hikes for essential winter fuel, prompting community support initiatives.
Households in rural areas like Upper Teesdale are facing a steep increase in heating oil costs, with prices more than doubling compared to last year. For residents in places such as Middleton-in-Teesdale, where natural gas lines are unavailable, heating oil is the primary source of warmth during colder months, leading to potential expenses exceeding £1,000 per tank fill.
Recent figures indicate that households in rural regions, including Teesdale, Weardale, Northumberland, and parts of North Yorkshire, are currently paying approximately £600 for a 500-litre delivery of heating oil. This equates to roughly £1.19 per litre. In October 2025, the price for domestic heating oil was around 52p per litre.
This dramatic price rise is causing considerable concern in communities where reliance on oil-fired heating systems is unavoidable.
To help mitigate these costs, Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Services (UTASS), located in Middleton-in-Teesdale, operates a heating oil buying group. This initiative aims to secure lower prices for residents by consolidating orders and conducting monthly bulk purchases, which can reduce costs by approximately 3p per litre.
The UTASS scheme has become a vital resource for residents managing household budgets amid high energy prices. Emma Spry, the manager at UTASS, highlighted that the group aids residents with their "cash flow." She explained, "To get a discount on oil you need to be buying more than 1000 litres at a time, with our scheme the minimum order is 500 litres so this can help to spread the cost a bit for people."
UTASS itself utilizes heating oil to maintain its office temperature, underscoring the widespread impact of these energy costs on local organizations and the community.
