Guinness Closes Maryland Brewery Amid $1 Billion Restructuring

The Guinness Open Gate Brewery near Baltimore, Maryland, will close its doors to the public on November 1, marking the end of operations for the facility that opened in 2018. The closure will result in 174 Aramark employees losing their jobs. This decision is part of a broader $1 billion restructuring plan by Diageo, Guinness' parent company.

The brewery's closure was announced in a notice filed with the Maryland Department of Labor on October 1. A spokesperson for Diageo stated that the decision followed a "careful review of our operations and long-term business priorities," adding that it is "not a reflection of the passion, talent or dedication of our team, nor of the support we have received from consumers and the Baltimore community."

Since its opening, the Guinness Open Gate Brewery had welcomed over 2 million visitors. It was the first Guinness brewery to open in the U.S. since the brand's previous New York facility closed in 1954. The Maryland location was known for its experimental brews, allowing guests to create their own beers, with over 700 unique concoctions developed during its operation.

Industry experts suggest that changing consumer trends in alcohol consumption may have contributed to the closure. Recent research indicates a decline in alcohol use in the U.S. for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, practices like "zebra striping," where individuals alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, are cited as factors in this trend.

Despite the closure of the Maryland facility, Diageo affirmed its commitment to the Guinness brand. "Guinness remains one of our most important brands, and we are committed to investing in its long-term growth and success," the spokesperson said. "While our Baltimore brewery will close, our commitment to bringing Guinness to consumers around the world remains as strong as ever."

The Chicago brewery will now be the only Guinness location in the United States.
