Global Fuel Prices See Decline Amid Peace Deal Hopes

Global fuel prices have begun to recede in recent weeks, influenced by growing optimism surrounding a potential peace deal. This easing of tensions has led to a decrease in motor fuel prices, which had previously surged due to disruptions in oil production and transportation.

In the United Kingdom, average petrol prices stood at 154.72 pence per litre and diesel at 174.30 pence per litre as of Thursday, according to RAC Fuel Watch data. These figures represent a significant increase from pre-conflict levels, when petrol cost 132.05 pence per litre and diesel was 141.6 pence.

Similarly, in the United States, average gasoline prices, which surpassed $4.50 per gallon last month, have now fallen to $3.97 per gallon. This is up from $2.98 per gallon before the conflict. Diesel prices have seen a more substantial rise, increasing from $3.76 to $5.09 per gallon over the same period.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, indicated that a sustained decrease in global oil and wholesale petrol prices could eventually translate to lower prices at the pump. However, he cautioned that the speed at which these savings will be passed on to consumers remains uncertain. The significant rise in pump prices experienced during March and April has heightened concerns about how quickly any subsequent decreases will be reflected for drivers.

The conflict's impact on global energy markets was immediate, causing a spike in fuel costs due to slowed production and transit of oil from the Middle East. While recent market movements suggest a potential stabilization or decrease, the overall cost of fuel remains higher than before the hostilities began.
