Global Chip Shortage Expected to Drive Up Prices for Electronics

Global shortages of memory chips are poised to increase prices for smartphones, laptops, and other electronic devices later this year, according to Alex Baldock, the chief executive of electronics retailer Currys. Baldock stated that the burgeoning demand for artificial intelligence and the expansion of data centers are consuming a significant portion of the world's silicon supply, leaving less available for consumer electronics such as mobile phones and laptops.

"That will cause availability challenges and some cost price inflation," Baldock said. He indicated that the company has anticipated this trend and has taken steps to secure its supply chain. "We’ve seen this coming for some time; we’ve made sure we’ve bought [silicon] forward, so we’ve got good security of supply in computing and phones until at least September," he added.

Currys is reportedly working to mitigate the impact on consumers. "We’re working really hard to protect the consumer as far as possible from price rises," Baldock noted.
