Glencore Chief Reaffirms London Commitment Amid Australian Listing Plans

Glencore's chief executive Gary Nagle has stated the company remains committed to its London Stock Exchange listing, despite announcing plans for a secondary listing on the Australian stock market scheduled for October. The move aims to "strengthen our profile in one of our most important operating jurisdictions" and broaden the company's investor base.

Nagle addressed concerns that the Australian listing might signal a departure from London, emphasizing that the company had thoroughly investigated a potential move to New York previously and concluded that remaining in London was optimal. "As we sit today, the situation is [that London] is the optimal exchange for us to be listed on – for now, we’re not looking to move from London," he said.

This announcement comes as Glencore reported a significant increase in its first-half earnings, which surged 86 percent to $10.1 billion, with sales climbing 49 percent to $174 billion. The company's trading arm saw earnings more than double to $3.3 billion, boosted by market volatility stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. The mining arm's profits also rose, up 72 percent to $6.5 billion, aided by higher commodity prices. The company's shares rose 4.1 percent following the results.

Glencore's decision to pursue a secondary listing in Australia follows a similar path taken by rival miner BHP, which delisted from the UK market for Australia in 2022. The secondary listing is expected to provide Glencore with access to new pools of capital and enhance its presence in a key operational region.
