General Mills Taps Dana McNabb as CEO to Navigate Challenging Consumer Landscape
The company veteran will succeed Jeff Harmening, aiming to steer the Cheerios maker through inflation and changing consumer habits.
General Mills announced Wednesday that Chief Operating Officer Dana McNabb will become the company's next chief executive officer, succeeding Jeff Harmening on January 1. McNabb, who has spent 27 years at the food giant, faces the challenge of leading the Cheerios maker through a period marked by a difficult spending environment for consumers, increased competition from private-label brands, and rising costs.
Consumer goods companies have seen a shift in leadership as boards seek to address sluggish growth and navigate complex market conditions. These challenges include uncertainty related to U.S. tariffs, elevated supply chain costs exacerbated by global conflicts, and the need to connect with evolving consumer preferences, particularly among younger demographics.
McNabb, 50, will be the first woman to lead General Mills as CEO, positioning her as one of a select few women at the helm of major U.S. consumer-products companies. Her tenure at General Mills has included senior leadership roles in general management, enterprise strategy, marketing, and international operations.
Under Harmening, who has been CEO for nearly a decade and with the company since 1994, General Mills expanded its presence in the pet-food market through the acquisition of Blue Buffalo. The company also undertook portfolio reshaping and increased investment in digital capabilities. Harmening will transition to the role of executive chair when McNabb assumes the CEO position.
Earlier this month, General Mills reported first-quarter results that exceeded sales and profit expectations. The company reaffirmed its annual forecast, attributing its performance to price increases and steady demand for packaged foods, which helped offset higher input costs. Despite these positive results, the company's shares have fallen approximately 27% year-to-date.
