Fuel Prices Continue to Drop in Channel Islands as Wholesale Costs Fall
Providers Rubis and ATF Fuels report steady reductions at the pump, mirroring global market trends.
Fuel prices in the Channel Islands are continuing to decrease, with major providers attributing the trend to falling wholesale costs. Both Rubis and ATF Fuels have confirmed that recent reductions in global oil prices are now being reflected at local forecourts in Guernsey and Jersey.
The price of petrol and diesel had reached a peak in May, coinciding with geopolitical events, but has since begun a steady decline. In the last fortnight, global oil prices have returned to pre-conflict levels. The RAC reported in June the fastest monthly fall in diesel prices since 2000, with a decrease of 17 pence per liter. Petrol prices have also seen reductions, though less pronounced than diesel.
A spokesperson for Rubis indicated that further price reductions are anticipated if wholesale costs continue to fall. This sentiment was echoed by ATF Fuels, with both companies expressing optimism for more savings to be passed on to consumers over time.
The Jersey Consumer Council acknowledged the price drops and encouraged islanders to compare prices at different stations. However, the council advised that consumers should not expect prices to decrease as rapidly as they had previously risen. They explained that while retailers often pass on wholesale price increases swiftly, reductions tend to occur more gradually. This is partly due to consumer behavior, as drivers are more inclined to seek out better prices when costs are increasing compared to when they are falling.
This ongoing decrease in fuel prices follows a proposal by a Jersey politician to temporarily reduce fuel duty for three months to alleviate the cost of living pressures on island residents.
