Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers Plans Major California Expansion
The fast-casual chain intends to open 60 new locations across the United States, with a significant focus on California.
Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, a popular fast-casual chain originating from Wichita, Kansas, is significantly expanding its presence in California. The company announced plans to open 60 new restaurants nationwide as part of a multiyear development strategy, with a notable emphasis on the Golden State.
The expansion will concentrate on Northern California, while also building upon the brand's existing footprint in Southern California. Freddy’s currently operates several locations in Southern California, including in Bakersfield, Barstow, Fontana, Glendora, Norco, San Marcos, and Victorville, and has identified the California market as having strong potential.
Freddy's is known for its fresh, never-frozen beef, small-batch frozen custard, and classic American comfort food. Signature menu items include the Freddy’s Original Double, Freddy’s Original Patty Melt, and the Signature Turtle frozen custard sundae. The chain, established in 2002, now has 580 locations across the U.S.
As part of its growth strategy, Freddy's is also offering franchise opportunities. "A strong franchise system is built on operators who see long-term opportunity within the brand," said Freddy’s chief development officer Andrew Thengvall. He added that the company is focused on supporting its franchisees through new restaurant prototypes, flexible real estate options, and development strategies designed for sustainable growth.
This expansion into California occurs as other national chains, such as Raising Cane’s and In-N-Out Burger, continue to invest in the state, banking on its large population and consumer demand for quick-service dining options. Freddy's has not yet released specific locations or timelines for the new California openings.
