Four UK Firms Face Takeover Bids Totaling £10 Billion

Four British companies are currently subject to takeover bids totaling approximately £10 billion, as foreign investors continue to target the UK stock market for potential bargains. This trend intensifies concerns about the ongoing exodus of firms from the London exchange.

FTSE 250 engineer Rotork has accepted a £4.1 billion offer from Swiss conglomerate ABB. Simultaneously, US private equity firm KKR has improved its bid for FTSE 100 energy company DCC to £5.8 billion. On the AIM market, photonics specialist Gooch & Housego, which supplies precision optics to the aerospace and defense sectors, has agreed to a £400 million takeover by Washington-based private equity firm Arlington Capital Partners. Pawnbroker Ramsdens has also backed an improved £232 million offer from its US rival FirstCash.

These recent bids add to a list of proposed takeovers of prominent UK firms, including Schroders, Beazley, Easyjet, and Tate & Lyle, further fueling discussions about companies leaving the London market and falling under foreign ownership.

Analysis from City broker Peel Hunt indicates that the value of UK-listed firms facing bids in the first half of the year was 27 times greater than the value of new companies listing on the stock market. The Association of Investment Companies has cautioned that low valuations are making the UK an attractive location for investors seeking to capitalize on the market's decline.

Following the announcements, shares in Rotork saw a significant jump of 66.8 percent, while Gooch & Housego shares rose by 39 percent and Ramsdens by 12.9 percent. DCC's shares experienced a slight dip of 0.3 percent.
