Fort Lauderdale Boat Show Highlights Growing Vessel Size and Advanced Capabilities

The 67th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) is underway, presenting an array of superships and highlighting trends in the luxury maritime industry. The event, running through November 1, generates an annual economic impact of $1.79 billion and supports approximately 100,000 jobs in South Florida. This year's show features an emphasis on increasingly larger vessels, with organizers noting that boats continue to grow in size.

One of the most prominent vessels at the show is Oceanco's Draak, a 305-foot superyacht originally built in 2014. It has been extensively refitted to support scientific research and deep-sea exploration, serving as a companion to the yacht Leviathan. This transformation reflects a shift in owner preferences, moving beyond opulent amenities to yachts that serve as platforms for diving, research, and accessing remote locations. Andrew Doole, president of Informa US Boat Shows, noted that this trend brings new skills, jobs, and technology to the industry.

Draak is equipped with an onboard medical treatment area featuring a hyperbaric chamber and a fully equipped dive center, underscoring its new role. Oriana Schneps, owner of The Yacht Edit, commented on the importance of preparedness for expeditions, especially in remote areas.

The show also features the Sirena 118 yacht, Ikigai, noted for its unique interior design incorporating natural elements like moss green, burgundy, and mustard colors, alongside pressed leaves, peacock feathers, and seashells. Attendees can also explore innovative hybrid-propulsion and electrified vessels. Chuck Cashman, senior vice president of global yacht sales at MarineMax, suggested that the appeal of these technologies lies in their practical benefits, such as quieter operation, reduced vibration, and greater efficiency.

Further demonstrating the evolution of yacht design, the Princess X90 makes its North American debut with an expandable beach club cockpit featuring fold-down balconies. The Absolute Navetta 66 showcases a fourth cabin set above sea level with views of an infinity pool. Other notable models include the Galeon 570 SKY with its "Beach Mode" and the new Princess C48, both designed to enhance indoor-outdoor living and proximity to the water.

Artificial intelligence is also making inroads into yachting, with AI-powered systems assisting with navigation, routing, and docking. Schneps noted the potential for AI and robotics to handle repetitive or hazardous tasks, freeing up crew to focus on guest services and duties requiring human judgment. Examples include robotic systems assisting with guest greetings and towel retrieval.

Beyond the technological advancements, FLIBS offers various attractions for all attendees, including a floating pickleball court and children's clinics. The Windward VIP Experience provides enhanced amenities, including catering by chefs from popular culinary competition shows.

Notable yachts on display include:

Oceanco Draak

At 305 feet, the Draak is highlighted as the "Queen of the Show." This refitted vessel, originally delivered in 2014, is now geared towards research and exploration, featuring a dive center and a decompression chamber. It is on display but not for sale.

Royal Hakvoort Shipyard Scout

This 209-foot ice-class explorer yacht, priced around $106 million, is designed for remote travel with a helideck and a range of 4,800 nautical miles. Its ice-class capability allows for exploration in colder regions.

Feadship Rock.it

This nearly 200-foot Feadship, delivered in 2014 and updated in 2024, offers a range of 5,300 nautical miles. It features a main salon convertible to a cinema, a skylounge, and a sun deck with a Jacuzzi. It is on the market for $47.9 million.

Oceanfast Idol

This 196-foot yacht, built in 2007 and refitted in 2022, includes amenities such as a helipad, a gym, an outdoor teppanyaki grill, and a Jacuzzi. It can accommodate up to 14 guests and is listed for $22 million.
