Ford Sierra Cosworth Soars in Value, From 1980s Family Car to Million-Dollar Collectible

The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, a performance car from the 1980s, has transitioned from a contemporary family car to a highly sought-after collector's item, with some examples now valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. This surge in value has placed the 'Fast Ford' in competition with traditionally more prestigious marques like Aston Martin and Ferrari.

Later this month, six Sierra Cosworth models are scheduled to go to auction in Northamptonshire, with a collective estimate of £1 million. This upcoming sale highlights the significant appreciation of these vehicles in the classic car market.

Evolution of a Performance Icon

The original Ford Sierra RS Cosworth debuted in March 1985, designed to homologate the Sierra for Group A Touring Car racing. It required the production of 5,000 road-legal units. Launched in July 1986, the three-door model featured a Cosworth-designed 2.0-liter turbo engine and was engineered by Ford's Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE) department. It was notable for its ability to challenge more expensive sports cars of its era.

The RS500 variant, announced in July 1987, represented an evolution of the original. It featured an uprated Cosworth engine producing 224 bhp, enhanced bodywork, and was hand-assembled. A total of 5,545 RS Cosworths were built, with 500 of these converted by Aston Martin Tickford into the RS500. The RS500 is now considered the pinnacle of 1980s performance Fords for collectors.

Rising Market Value

While the value of RS Cosworths, especially the RS500, began increasing through the 2010s, prices saw a substantial jump in 2022. In November of that year, a standard Sierra RS Cosworth with fewer than 9,000 miles sold for £132,750, exceeding its previous record by £10,000. However, a significant milestone occurred in February 2023 with the sale of a 5,192-mile RS500 for £596,250, approximately 30 times its original showroom price and over four times the record set just months prior. This sale, described as potentially the finest surviving example, was termed an 'outlier' by classic car valuation expert John Mayhead, though it has evidently elevated the general market value for these cars.

In the past two years, Iconic Auctioneers has sold two RS500 models for over £100,000. For context, the average sale price for a 1960s Series 1 Jaguar E-Type typically ranges between £70,000 and £150,000.

Notable Cars at Auction

The upcoming auction at Silverstone will feature several significant Sierra Cosworth models. Among them are three limited-run RS500 variants:

  • A white RS500, number 468, with just over 16,700 miles, is estimated between £150,000 and £200,000. This example is noted for its low mileage and its inclusion in the BonkeRS Collection and a recognized publication on Ford RS models.
  • A black RS500, number 195, with 44,599 miles, carries a guide price of £80,000 to £100,000.
  • A Monsoon Blue RS500, number 470, with 67,260 miles, is estimated at £90,000 to £120,000, representing one of the rarest color options.

Additionally, a competition RS500 with a history in Australian and British Touring Car Championships is expected to sell for between £400,000 and £450,000. A highly original 1987 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth with only 6,242 miles from new, which spent 37 years with its original owner, is estimated at £100,000 to £120,000.

The final car in the lot is a rare 1991 Sapphire Cosworth Rouse Sport 304-R, believed to be one of two surviving Diamond White 4x4 examples converted by Andy Rouse, with bidding expected to exceed £50,000.

Rob Hubbard, auctioneer at Iconic Auctioneers, commented on the collection, stating, "Performance Fords continue to command huge affection and serious collector interest, and this group of Sierras is a wonderful reminder of why." He added that the cars appeal to enthusiasts at various levels, from highly original road cars to historic racing machines.
