Ford Recalls Over 741,000 Vehicles for Park System Issue
A transmission problem could lead to unintended vehicle movement if the parking brake isn't applied.
Ford is recalling more than 741,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a potential issue with the park system that could increase the risk of a crash or injury. The recall addresses a transmission problem that may damage the park system components.
The affected vehicles include certain Ford F-150, Lincoln Aviator, Ford Explorer, Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Expedition models from the 2018 through 2021 model years. According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these vehicles might experience temporary engagement of their transmission parking pawl while in motion during certain shifts. This engagement could potentially damage the park system.
If the transmission park system is damaged, the vehicle's ability to remain stationary in "park" without the parking brake applied may be compromised. Such unintended movement could result in a crash or injury.
Ford is aware of 24 allegations of property damage and nine alleged injuries related to this issue, the NHTSA report states. Two of the alleged injuries were described as emotional injuries.
Owners of the recalled vehicles will be notified by mail and instructed to take their cars to a Ford or Lincoln dealership. Technicians will update the Powertrain Control Module with the latest software. Additionally, dealers will inspect the transmission for any park system damage and replace any affected components if necessary. These services will be provided at no cost to the vehicle owner.
