Ford Recalls Over 110,000 Mustangs for Defect Risks

Ford is initiating recalls for more than 110,000 Mustang vehicles due to two separate defects that could compromise safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified issues affecting certain Mustang, Mustang GTD, and Mustang Mach-E models.

One recall targets 42,784 Mustang Mach-E SUVs, where a component in the rear drive system may malfunction. This could lead to a loss of power while driving or unexpected rolling if the vehicle is parked without the parking brake engaged, both of which heighten the risk of a crash.

The larger of the two recalls encompasses 67,842 Mustang and Mustang GTD vehicles. In these models, specific cold-weather conditions could cause the windshield wipers to function only on the high-speed setting, and the windshield washer system may not operate correctly. This potential for reduced driver visibility increases the likelihood of accidents.

Ford has stated that dealerships will repair or replace any affected parts at no cost to the owner. Owners of the impacted vehicles will be notified by mail starting around July 13 with further instructions.

This action comes as Ford was recently recognized by J.D. Power as the best mainstream U.S. automaker for vehicle quality, a title it has not held in 16 years. The survey, which polled 80,000 customers with new 2026 vehicles, found Ford improved quality more than any other mainstream manufacturer, reporting 152 owner-reported problems per 100 vehicles in the first 90 days of ownership, a significant decrease from the previous year.

Ford President and CEO Jim Farley expressed pride in the company's achievement, stating it resulted from years of focused effort to compete on quality. Despite this recognition, Ford has been a leader in recalls within the U.S. auto industry, issuing over 50 recalls so far this year. A recent recall, for example, involved thousands of SUVs and F-150 pickup trucks from model years 2018 through 2021 due to loose parts that could create a road hazard. Ford advised customers in that instance to use their electronic parking brake until the recall repair was completed.
