Floating 'Doomsday Bunker' Island Concept for Sale at $450 Million

A conceptual private island resort in the Maldives, designed as an eco-conscious "doomsday bunker" for the ultra-wealthy, is being offered for sale at a preliminary price of $450 million. The project, named "The Adaptive Atoll," has not yet broken ground but envisions a unique solution to rising sea levels.

The concept features a 155-acre deep-water lagoon site in the Maldives, on which modular overwater suites would be docked into massive, solar-powered fortresses. These structures are designed to rise with the ocean, bypassing the crisis of land submersion. The resort would be built on a long-term leasehold basis from the Maldivian government.

According to Chris Krolow, founder of Private Islands Inc., the firm marketing the concept, the technology for the adaptive structures is derived from existing heavy-duty offshore engineering. The resort would be anchored by an earthquake-resistant rail system installed on the lagoon floor, which would silently transport the customizable suites.

The central "Mother-Ship" fortresses, constructed from raw timber and coralline stone, would be the power hubs, utilizing 100% solar energy. Plans include 10 permanent fortresses, with the potential to add 30 or more smaller bunk pavilion suites. The site would also accommodate fly-in access.

Inside a futuristic development built all on the water.

Krolow stated that the target buyer is an ultra-high-net-worth individual who already possesses high-end waterfront properties. He described the ideal buyer as someone who "needs to be a little crazy" and possess a pioneering spirit to invest in such an unconventional project.

The Maldives, an island nation already contending with the impacts of climate change and rising sea levels, serves as the proposed location for this ambitious development. The project aims to offer a permanent solution for those seeking security in an uncertain global climate.
