Fiat Topolino EV Arrives in UK: A Tiny, Affordable Electric Quadricycle
Priced at £9,000, the Fiat Topolino offers an urban-focused electric experience with a top speed of 28mph and a 46-mile range, targeting a younger demographic and urban commuters.
The Fiat Topolino, a compact electric quadricycle, is set to launch in the UK this autumn, offering a unique proposition in the burgeoning electric vehicle market. Priced at approximately £9,000, this two-seater vehicle boasts a top speed of 28mph and a range of 46 miles on a full charge, positioning it as a specialized option for city driving.
Classified as an L6 quadricycle, the Topolino is mechanically similar to the Citroen Ami, which has been available in the UK since 2022. This classification brings certain limitations, including the restricted top speed and range, but also contributes to lower production costs and its accessible price point. The vehicle's diminutive size, measuring 2.5 meters long, makes it shorter than the original Mini.
Inside, the Topolino features a basic setup with a steering wheel, a simple digital speedometer, a handbrake, and controls for the single-speed gearbox. It includes a cradle for a smartphone to serve as a navigation screen and a removable handheld fan for cabin cooling, as it lacks traditional air vents. The seats are manually adjustable, and the oval door mirrors are adjusted manually through flip-up windows reminiscent of the Citroen 2CV.
Power comes from an 8bhp electric motor coupled with a 5.5kWh battery, which can be fully charged from a domestic socket in approximately four hours. Due to not requiring conventional car crash-test regulations, the Topolino weighs less than half a tonne. Its acceleration is gradual, taking about 10 seconds to reach its maximum speed.
The Fiat Topolino has seen significant sales in Europe, with over 40,000 units sold since its introduction in 2023, particularly in Italy and France, where younger drivers aged 14 and above can operate such vehicles due to relaxed licensing laws. In the UK, however, drivers must be at least 16 years old and hold either an AM moped licence or a full driving licence.
Fiat CEO Olivier Francois has noted that the average buyer in Europe is in their mid-40s, suggesting a broader appeal beyond teenagers. The vehicle is also anticipated to attract individuals who have lost their driving licenses or require alternative personal transport. Its design, with oval headlights and vintage-inspired wheel trims, evokes the spirit of the original Fiat 500 Topolino from the 1930s to 1950s.
The doors open in opposing directions—the driver's door is rear-hinged, while the passenger's door is front-hinged—a design choice aimed at reducing production costs by using identical parts. This asymmetrical door opening, combined with the vehicle's compact dimensions, contributes to its distinctive appearance.
Driving the Topolino is described as akin to a dodgem car. The steering is direct and unassisted, while acceleration and braking are deliberately gentle. The suspension is minimal, leading to a firm ride that can make the vehicle feel unsettled on uneven surfaces. Despite these characteristics, the Topolino is considered fun to drive at lower speeds within suitable environments. However, it is not recommended for use on roads with speed limits above 30mph, where drivers can feel vulnerable and impede traffic flow.
Order books for the UK opened on July 1, with first deliveries expected in early autumn. Customers can choose between two trims: Verde Vita (pastel blue) and Corallo (matt orange). A four-seat version, the Multiplina, with a higher top speed of 55mph, is slated for arrival next year.
Fiat positions the Topolino as a secondary or tertiary vehicle for complementing urban life and short journeys, rather than a replacement for a primary car. This aligns with the global trend of micromobility, where over 120 million such vehicles, including e-scooters and electric bikes, were sold worldwide last year. In the UK, the Topolino will only be available in left-hand drive. Its price is also slightly higher than its sister model, the Citroen Ami.
Specifications for the Fiat Topolino include dimensions of 2,535mm length, 1,536mm width, and 1,530mm height, with a total weight of 487kg. It has 0 litres of boot space. The vehicle is powered by a 5.5kWh battery, offering a range of 46 miles and a top speed of 28mph. Charging takes approximately four hours from a domestic socket. The turning circle is 7.2 meters. The Topolino is covered by a 2-year manufacturer's warranty, with the battery warrantied for 3 years or 25,000 miles. Service intervals are estimated to be every two years or 12,500 miles. It cannot be driven on motorways and is not designed for towing.
