Everyman Sees Boost in Cinema Visits Amid Economic Uncertainty

Everyman, an upmarket cinema chain with 49 locations, has reported a surge in admissions, with 2.6 million visits recorded in the six months leading up to July 2. This represents a 21 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

This rise in attendance contributed to a 24 percent increase in sales, reaching £70 million from £56.5 million in the previous year. Despite this positive trading performance, the company's directors have expressed caution regarding the full-year outlook due to a challenging economic environment. The fourth quarter is noted as being particularly significant for the company's overall annual performance.

Shares in Everyman saw a slight dip of 2 percent following the announcement, as the company indicated that its 2026 performance is expected to be only marginally ahead of the previous year's results. This update highlights ongoing concerns about the cost of doing business and a general lack of consumer confidence.

New chief executive Farah Golant is overseeing a turnaround effort for the group, which has paused expansion plans and is exploring a delisting from London's junior stock market amid a significant decline in its share price. Everyman stated that it is continuing discussions with stakeholders regarding a delisting and anticipates providing a further update by the end of August.

If Everyman proceeds with a delisting, it will join a growing number of companies considering an exit from the London market, either through share buybacks or takeovers.

The cinema chain is also looking to a strong summer slate of blockbuster films for continued success. AMC Theatres, owner of the rival Odeon chain, has noted the positive impact of major releases. AMC Theatres highlighted that "The Odyssey," starring Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, achieved record-breaking IMAX box office sales during its initial two weekends of release.

In June, AMC Theatres pointed to an "appealing" lineup of recent releases, including "Wuthering Heights" and "The Devil Wears Prada 2," which helped to build "strong market share."

Everyman's challenges can be traced back to the pandemic, which led to extended cinema closures, and subsequent writers' strikes that limited theatrical releases. In recent years, the company has also faced increased competition from cinema giants like Vue and Odeon, which have introduced reclining seats, while other venues have enhanced their food and beverage offerings.

Golant, who previously led television production group All3Media, has emphasized that Everyman will not compromise on its signature features, such as its distinctive sofas. She also noted that despite rising concerns over the cost of living, consumers are unlikely to forgo social activities entirely. However, she suggested that spending on larger purchases like cars, homes, or holidays might be reduced.

Golant attributes the rebound in demand for "in real life culture" to people re-engaging with social activities after extended periods at home during COVID-19 lockdowns. She specifically mentioned that Gen Z audiences are leading the return to cinemas, with a recent survey indicating they visit the cinema around seven times per year, making them the most frequent moviegoers among age groups.
