EV Market Booms with New Models Launching Every Fortnight
The selection of electric vehicles available to UK buyers has doubled in three years, offering increased range and performance.
The electric vehicle market is expanding rapidly, with new models being introduced approximately every two weeks, significantly broadening choices for consumers. Analysis from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders indicates that the number of fully electric vehicle (EV) models available to UK car buyers has doubled in just three years, now standing at 171.
Since 2023, 85 new EV models have entered the market, ranging from compact city cars to luxury grand tourers. The average range for these latest EVs is approximately 300 miles on a single charge, exceeding the typical weekly mileage of British drivers. The longest-range EVs available can now offer over 500 miles of driving distance.
In addition to fully electric options, the market also offers 109 plug-in hybrid models and 52 hybrid electric models. This means that over 75 percent of vehicles available on the UK market can operate without producing tailpipe emissions.
Among the notable new EVs is the Vauxhall Corsa Electric, priced from £26,780. It closely resembles its petrol counterpart in design and interior, offering a range of up to 265 miles. It can achieve an 80 percent charge in 30 minutes.
The Renault 5 E-Tech, starting at £20,995, is a small electric car with a retro design. It has garnered significant popularity, leading to a waiting list. This model provides up to 250 miles of range, 150bhp, and can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in eight seconds. Its cabin features two 10-inch screens with integrated Google services.
For those seeking a long-distance SUV, the BMW iX3, from £62,080, offers a range of 500 miles. This redesigned mid-size SUV features BMW's Panoramic iDrive display and updated driving dynamics, positioning it as a luxury option for extended travel.
The Audi A6 e-tron, with a starting price of £65,165, caters to consumers who prefer estate car body styles. This performance-oriented estate car boasts 456bhp, a 0–62mph acceleration time of 4.5 seconds, and a range of up to 444 miles, suitable for family journeys.
The Mercedes EQS, available from £91,765, aims to provide the same level of luxury as the S-Class. It offers over 500 miles of range, with the capability to gain up to 199 miles of driving range from just 10 minutes of rapid charging. It also includes steer-by-wire technology.
Sports car enthusiasts can consider the Porsche Taycan, starting at £88,400. This four-door sports saloon delivers 429bhp, a top speed of 143mph, and accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 4.8 seconds. Features like simulated gears and enhanced sound aim to replicate the experience of driving a combustion engine vehicle, with a maximum range of 434 miles on a single charge.
