ESPN Lays Off Staff Following NFL Network Acquisition

ESPN has implemented layoffs affecting numerous employees, primarily due to redundancies stemming from its $3 billion acquisition of NFL Network, according to an internal memo from Chairman Jimmy Pitaro. The integration process, which began in January 2026, led to a careful evaluation of the company's structure and resources.

"As a result, we had to make some difficult decisions about job impacts that we will be communicating today," Pitaro stated in the memo obtained by Front Office Sports. "While most of the job impacts are tied to the acquisition, we will also notify colleagues in other parts of the company today that their positions have been impacted."

The acquisition of NFL Network, along with assets like the RedZone channel and NFL Fantasy Football, was finalized in January 2026. As part of the agreement, ESPN absorbed NFL Network talent for the remainder of their existing contracts before new negotiations can take place.

Several on-air personalities were among those laid off. These include NFL analyst Ryan Clark, MLB play-by-play announcer/host Karl Ravech, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, "SportsCenter" anchor David Lloyd, injury/fantasy football analyst Stephania Bell, NFL Network analyst Charles Davis, "First Take" contributor Cam Newton, NFL analyst Bart Scott, and reporter Andreas Hale.

Ryan Clark's departure drew particular attention as he was reportedly informed of his layoff mid-broadcast during the show "NFL Live." The Athletic reported that ESPN had planned to inform Clark on Tuesday as part of broader layoffs but feared the news would leak, leading to the on-air announcement on Monday. Clark, who joined ESPN in 2015, was reportedly earning $2 million annually on a deal negotiated in 2024.

Stephen A. Smith, who recently signed a contract extension, commented on the layoffs, suggesting that more cuts may be forthcoming. He indicated on his YouTube channel that he expressed his displeasure to ESPN management regarding Clark's termination.

This round of layoffs follows previous staff reductions at ESPN. In the fall of 2024, the network laid off on-air personalities Robert Griffin III, Samantha Ponder, and Zach Lowe. Prior to that, in June 2023, ESPN cut approximately 20 on-air personalities.
