EasyJet to Launch First Loyalty Scheme for Budget Airlines
The budget carrier aims to reward frequent travelers and holiday bookers with a new program set to debut in 2027, though it will not include lounge access.
EasyJet is preparing to launch a loyalty scheme, a first for a budget airline, as it seeks to further engage its customer base. The program, announced in the airline's half-year report, is slated for introduction in fiscal year 2027 and will encompass both flight bookings and packages purchased through easyJet Holidays.
Chief executive Kenton Jarvis stated that the scheme will offer value to members regardless of their travel frequency. "Like everything, if you're more engaged with the brand, then you'll get more value from it," Jarvis told The Times. He anticipates the program will have broad appeal, aligning with easyJet's mission to make travel accessible and affordable. Specific details of how the loyalty program will operate are expected in early 2027. While the airline has not yet confirmed all aspects, it is anticipated to follow common models of earning points for bookings redeemable on future travel.
Unlike loyalty programs offered by premium carriers such as British Airways or Virgin Atlantic, easyJet's scheme will not include lounge access. The airline's report highlighted its existing loyal customer base, with 71 percent of bookings originating from returning customers. This trend has also been observed with its easyJet Plus subscription service, launched in 2008, which offers benefits like dedicated bag drop, speedy boarding, allocated seating, and fast-track security for an annual fee of £249.
In other recent news, an easyJet flight from Hurghada, Egypt, to London Luton Airport was diverted to Rome Fiumicino on May 19 due to a passenger having a power bank charging in their checked luggage. The captain made the decision to divert as a precautionary measure in compliance with safety regulations, as power banks can pose a fire hazard if they overheat or short-circuit. The 180 passengers on board were provided with overnight accommodation and a rescheduled flight the following day. EasyJet emphasized that the safety of its customers and crew is its highest priority and that it adheres strictly to manufacturer guidelines.
