Dua Lipa's $3M London Renovation Hits Six-Year Snag
Singer faces extended wait for London home completion due to extensive basement expansion and neighborhood concerns.
Singer Dua Lipa has encountered a significant delay in moving into her London home, purchased in 2020 for approximately $8.5 million (£6.75 million). Extensive renovations, estimated to cost $3 million, have been ongoing for six years and are now projected to continue until July 2027.
The singer and her husband, Callum Turner, are currently renting nearby while the work progresses. The multi-million dollar project involves a substantial basement expansion, nearly four times the size of the original, which will include a swimming pool, music studio, and cinema.
Project Delays and Complications
Dua Lipa's team submitted planning applications in 2021, but construction did not commence until 2024 after receiving final approval. The scale of the renovation, including excavation to a depth of at least six meters and the addition of a 310-square-meter underground structure, has presented numerous challenges. Approximately 500 tonnes of soil have been excavated. Special measures are in place to protect 17 historic trees surrounding the property and to mitigate concerns about subsidence and flooding affecting neighboring homes. All machinery is required to be mounted with anti-vibration isolators.
Local conservation groups had raised objections regarding the potential loss of green space and trees, as well as drainage issues. In a letter to the council in December 2021, a representative for a local neighborhood forum expressed concerns about demolishing an existing rear extension that contributed to the area's character. The forum also objected to the felling of a willow tree and potential harm to ivy-clad lava brick boundary walls, which are noted features of the streetscape. They suggested a natural wildlife pond might be appropriate given the site's proximity to an underground stream.
Design and Construction Process
Design expert Leigh Ann Raines of Chic By Design notes that such large-scale undertakings for an A-list celebrity can cost upwards of $3 million and involve top London designers and contractors. Excavating beneath an existing structure is significantly more complex than outward or upward expansion. Raines highlighted that the construction team is employing manual methods and adapted tools to minimize noise and vibration, a process that inherently takes more time.
Dua's team has reportedly implemented noise, dust, and waste control measures and provided contact details for residents to address any complaints, stating a commitment to minimizing disruption. The plans also include a biodiverse roof garden atop the new basement.
Current Circumstances and Future Plans
Despite the ongoing construction, Lipa and Turner have spent time in the United States for work commitments. Turner is slated to film two upcoming projects, including a remake of the 1981 horror film Possession and the baseball film The Comebacker. The couple has emphasized the importance of staying together amidst their demanding careers, which often require international travel.
The projected completion date of mid-2027 means Lipa will have to wait an additional 13 months before she can move into her renovated London home.
