Dow Surges 1,000 Points, S&P 500 Hits Record High Amid Iran Deal Hopes and AI Stock Boom
Treasury Secretary signals a potential deal with Iran, easing oil prices, while strong earnings from Palantir and Caterpillar propel tech and industrial sectors.
U.S. stocks experienced a significant surge on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing approximately 1,041 points, or 2%, and the Nasdaq Composite rising 2.4%. The S&P 500 reached a new record high, increasing 1.8% to 7,736.85.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that a deal with Iran is nearing, which he suggested could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. "We are in talks with the Iranians," Bessent stated Tuesday morning. "There is a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow to open the strait and move towards a more normalized position in this conflict." He emphasized that such an agreement would restore "freedom of movement" through the vital waterway, through which approximately 20% of the world's oil supplies are transported.
Following Bessent's remarks, Brent crude oil prices fell 5.3% to $79.30 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate crude dropped 5.4% to $76.04. Bessent predicted further price declines as hundreds of ships currently held in the Persian Gulf are expected to resume passage. "It's not just energy. It's fertilizer, it's refined products, it is the various industrial gasses," Bessent said. "We could see a big relief trade as those prices go down."
The technology sector was boosted by strong performance from Palantir, whose shares rallied 29.3% after the company reported significant earnings growth driven by demand for its artificial intelligence tools. CEO Alex Karp described the quarter as "otherworldly," with overall revenue increasing 93% to $1.94 billion, including a 149% surge in commercial revenue to $764 million. Palantir also forecasted full-year revenue exceeding $8 billion, citing optimism about the "sovereign AI revolution."
Other AI-related stocks also saw gains, with Marvell Technology up 14.4%, Micron increasing 7.9%, Nvidia rising 2.3%, and Microsoft adding 1.6%. The industrial sector also benefited, as Caterpillar's shares climbed 6.5% after the company reported better-than-expected earnings and increased its annual revenue forecast, attributing the growth to high demand for construction equipment used in building AI data centers. Caterpillar also anticipates tariff costs to be at the lower end of its previously stated range.
These market movements occur amidst a strong earnings season, with over 84% of S&P 500 companies that have reported thus far surpassing expectations, according to FactSet. The previous day, the Dow closed at a record high, and Amazon's market capitalization exceeded $3 trillion for the first time. Investors also awaited SpaceX's first quarterly earnings report, with anticipation of significant share value fluctuations.
