"Donnie Darko" Producer Sues for Unpaid Royalties

The producer of the cult classic film "Donnie Darko" has filed a lawsuit alleging he is owed millions of dollars in unpaid royalties. Adam Fields, 60, a veteran producer known for films like "The Breakfast Club" and "Vision Quest," sued Shamrock Capital Advisors in Los Angeles, asserting he has not received his agreed-upon share of the film's profits since its premiere.

Fields signed a contract in 2000 that entitled him to 4% of the film's net profits, along with a bonus for his role in assembling the production. The lawsuit states that "Donnie Darko," which starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze, and Seth Rogen, has been continuously exploited across various platforms, including video on demand, streaming services, physical media, and theatrical re-releases.

Despite the film's ongoing commercial activity, profit statements provided to Fields have reportedly "consistently reported" no profits available for distribution. One statement covering earnings through December 31, 2025, indicated over $6.4 million in gross earnings, but after accounting for distribution fees and other deductions, it showed net profits at a deficit of $6 million. Fields questions how a film made in 28 days for $4.5 million has not generated a profit over two decades of commercial exploitation.

The lawsuit also claims that Fields has been excluded from a "Donnie Darko" sequel currently in development, despite an agreement that would entitle him to participate. This alleged exclusion has cost him "valuable professional opportunities and compensation."

Fields is seeking damages, access to the film's financial records, and involvement in any future "Donnie Darko" sequels. Shamrock Capital Advisors has been contacted for comment.
