Disney's 'Moana' Remake Faces Box Office Skepticism Amidst Critical Scrutiny

Disney's live-action remake of "Moana" is projected to have a subdued opening weekend at the North American box office, with industry experts anticipating a debut between $40 million and $60 million. This forecast, against a reported $250 million production budget, follows a trend of mixed financial results for several of the studio's recent live-action adaptations. The film officially premieres on July 10.

Early critical reception for "Moana" has been largely unfavorable, with the film initially holding a 32% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While this score has since risen to 39%, it places the remake among Disney's lower-rated adaptations, alongside the 2025 "Snow White" remake which also garnered criticism and projected similar box office numbers.

Critics have questioned the necessity of remaking a film that debuted less than a decade ago, with its sequel released only two years prior in 2024. Reviewers have described the film as a "money grab" and noted a lack of the vibrancy found in the original animated version. Some critics even suggested the production felt as if it could have been generated by AI, with one review stating, "This was, by all appearances, an incredibly costly and labour-intensive production, yet there is barely a moment in it which feels as if it couldn’t have been achieved by typing: ‘What if this scene from Moana was remade in live action?’ into a video generator’s prompt box."

While "Moana" isn't deemed the worst of Disney's recent remakes by some, it is seen by others as emblematic of issues within the studio's creative direction. The original "Moana" centered on a Polynesian teenager's quest to save her island, a premise that the live-action version largely replicates. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson returns as the demigod Maui, sporting a new look that has drawn some online commentary.

Several of Disney's recent live-action remakes have seen varied box office performances. The 2019 "Dumbo" remake opened to $45 million domestically, while "Snow White" debuted around $43 million. In contrast, the live-action adaptation of "Lilo & Stitch" achieved over $1 billion globally upon its release last year. The "Snow White" remake faced additional controversies, including discussions around its portrayal of dwarfism, lead actress Rachel Zegler's comments on the original film, and geopolitical remarks.
