Disney Increases Streaming Prices for Disney+ and Hulu Subscribers

Disney is raising the prices of its streaming services once again, with millions of subscribers facing increased monthly charges for Disney+ and Hulu.

The latest adjustment, the fourth price increase in four years, will see the ad-free versions of Disney+ and Hulu each increase by $2.50 per month, bringing their cost to $21.49. Several other subscription tiers will also see price rises ranging from $0.50 to $3.

Since its launch in 2019 at $6.99 per month, the ad-free Disney+ subscription has more than tripled in price, representing a 207% cumulative increase. Hulu, which has been available for a longer period, has experienced similar significant price escalations. Its paid subscription, which began at $7.99 per month for Hulu Plus in 2010, now stands at $21.49, an increase of $13.50 or 169%.

These price hikes come as Disney aims to boost profitability from its streaming operations, utilizing subscription increases, advertising, and bundled packages to drive revenue.

Bundle and Ad-Supported Tiers

The ad-free Disney+ Premium tier will now cost $21.49, up from $18.99, a 13% jump. Similarly, Hulu Premium's ad-free plan is rising from $18.99 to $21.49. For customers subscribing to both ad-free services separately, the combined monthly bill will increase from $37.98 to $42.98, an additional $5 per month or $60 annually.

The ad-free Disney+/Hulu bundle will now cost $21.99 per month, an increase from $19.99. The ad-supported versions of both Disney+ and Hulu will rise by $0.50, from $11.99 to $12.49 per month. The bundle including ads for both services remains at $12.99 per month, only $0.50 more than subscribing to either service individually.

Several bundles that include ESPN will also see price increases, with some packages rising by as much as $3 per month.

Subscriber Reactions and Industry Trends

The wider streaming industry has been moving away from the lower monthly prices that once positioned streaming as a competitive alternative to cable television. This shift has led subscribers to question the value proposition of streaming services at higher price points. On platforms like Reddit, some users have shared strategies for managing costs, such as rotating subscriptions on a monthly basis or canceling services after short periods.

Some parents have suggested that purchasing physical media, like Blu-ray discs, could be more cost-effective for frequently watched children's content compared to ongoing subscription fees.

Concerns have also been raised about the increase in advertisements, particularly on children's profiles. However, some subscribers still find streaming to be an affordable entertainment option when compared to other activities, such as going to the movies.

Promotional deals through wireless providers continue to be a factor for some subscribers who are hesitant to lose discounted rates. Disney is also working to integrate Disney+ and Hulu more closely, with plans for a unified app experience in the future.
