A diner has claimed he was "extorted" after being charged an unexpected "admin fee" for ordering a burger at Earls Kitchen and Bar in Denver, Colorado. The customer shared an image of his receipt from October 27, showing the fee added on top of the burger, truffle fries, and taxes.

The burger cost $24.75, with truffle fries adding $3. A three percent "admin fee" brought the total to $30.86. The diner expressed his frustration on Reddit, questioning the nature of the fee and stating, "Can a guy even enjoy a burger without being harassed and extorted in this God-forsaken place?"

The post sparked numerous negative reactions from other users, with many calling the fee "ridiculous" and a "ripoff." Some suggested the customer have the fee removed if it was not listed on the menu.

This incident highlights a growing sentiment among consumers regarding tipping culture and additional charges. A nationwide survey conducted earlier this year found that 78 percent of Americans believe tipping culture has become "ridiculous." Nearly half of those surveyed also indicated they have reduced their gratuities in 2026 due to increasing financial pressures.

Retail analyst Neil Saunders commented on the findings in June, noting that consumers are increasingly frustrated by both the expected tip amounts and the expanding number of situations where they are asked to leave gratuities. The Daily Mail has reached out to Earls for comment.
