Designer Fragrance Dupes Gain Popularity Amid Rising Luxury Scent Prices
A new wave of British brands is offering high-quality, affordable alternatives to expensive niche perfumes, focusing on scent over branding.
The market for luxury fragrances is seeing a rise in demand for sophisticated dupes, as consumers seek more accessible alternatives to high-priced niche scents. Brands like Noted Aromas, launched in 2022, are meeting this demand by producing fragrances that closely mimic the smells of designer originals, often at a fraction of the cost.
The trend reflects a broader shift in the fragrance industry, where niche perfumes have grown from a five percent market share pre-pandemic to approximately 20 percent post-pandemic. This growth has coincided with escalating prices, with some high-end scents costing upwards of £800. For example, Creed Aventus For Her Eau de Parfum Splash (500ml) is priced at £830 at John Lewis.
Noted Aromas aims to "democratize fine fragrance" by eliminating the costs associated with traditional luxury branding, such as elaborate store designs, celebrity endorsements, and extensive heritage marketing campaigns. Instead, the company invests in the quality of the fragrance itself and its ingredients, ensuring compliance with safety standards. Their 50ml scents are priced at £22.99.
"Inspired by" versions of popular fragrances offered by Noted Aromas include 'New York' (inspired by Le Labo's Santal 33), 'Portofino' (inspired by Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino), 'Rome' (inspired by Creed Aventus), and 'Lima' (inspired by Jo Malone Lime Basil And Mandarin). These dupes are created by expert perfumers who analyze the original scents through an intricate process. The company claims these fragrances are astonishingly similar to their high-end counterparts.
One such dupe, 'Sofia' by Noted Aromas, which is inspired by Byredo Gypsy Water (£150 for 50ml), was tested by deputy editor Lindsay Frankel. She found the likeness to be incredible, though she noted it initially had a strong impact that faded faster than the original. Despite this, she stated she would still purchase it given the significant cost saving of over £130.
Company representatives view these dupes not as replacements for designer fragrances, but as "everyday versions" suitable for activities like going to the gym or office, intended to be used alongside more exclusive scents reserved for special occasions. This approach acknowledges the unique appeal of original luxury fragrances, which often derive their magic from heritage, creative vision, and exquisite packaging, while still offering a place for more affordable, high-quality scent alternatives.
