Denza Bao 5 SUV Challenges Land Rover Defender with Hybrid Power and Luxury Features
Chinese automaker Denza unveils its boxy Bao 5 SUV, a plug-in hybrid aiming to compete with the iconic Land Rover Defender in the European market.
Chinese automotive brand Denza, a subsidiary of BYD, has introduced its Bao 5 SUV, a new plug-in hybrid vehicle that closely resembles the design of the Land Rover Defender. Denza has positioned the Bao 5 as a direct competitor to the British off-roader, aiming to capture a significant share of the European market for boxy SUVs, which represents over half of the segment's sales in the UK alone.
Denza has stated that the Bao 5 is intended to be its "entry ticket to the boxy SUV segment" and will compete for "best in class" status in areas such as off-road capability, intelligence, refinement, and versatility. The Land Rover Defender, a trendsetter in the large, rugged 4x4 category, has become Land Rover's best-selling model, with over 115,000 units sold last year.
The Bao 5 features a plug-in hybrid powertrain delivering over 500 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds. The vehicle offers a pure-electric range of over 50 miles and a combined range of 537 miles on a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery. Charging capabilities include DC fast charging, which can replenish the battery from 30% to 80% in 16 minutes, and 11kW AC charging, taking just over three hours for a 15% to 100% charge.
A standout feature of the Bao 5 is its 16 distinct driving modes, designed to enhance adaptability across various terrains, including specialized modes like 'Leopard' and 'Race.' The 'U-turn' mode is engineered to assist with maneuverability by intelligently controlling the wheels and brakes on different surfaces.
Inside, the Bao 5 boasts a luxury-focused interior with a multi-screen display setup inspired by a lock symbol. This includes a 12.3-inch driver display, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a head-up display, and a passenger widescreen. The vehicle comes equipped with Google Built-in, four-zone voice detection for controlling over 300 vehicle functions, an 18-speaker Devialet audio system, a panoramic sunroof, and heated and ventilated front seats with massage functions, alongside heated rear seats. A unique 4.5-liter cooled and heated storage compartment is also featured.
The Bao 5 will be available in two trims: Elegance and Ultimate. The Elegance model is priced at £69,500, while the Ultimate trim, which includes advanced features like intelligent hydraulic suspension and upgraded audio, costs £78,880. Orders for the Bao 5 will open in the summer, with deliveries scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026.
