Delta CEO: Supply, Not Just Fuel Costs, Drives Ticket Prices

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian stated that a lack of market supply, primarily due to air traffic control congestion, is a significant driver of elevated airline ticket prices, rather than solely fluctuating fuel costs.

"Prices will come down when we can fly more, when there’s more supply, it’s a supply and demand. Right now we’re kind of logjammed," Bastian told FOX Business. He explained that the current air traffic control system creates bottlenecks, limiting the industry's ability to increase capacity and flow.

Bastian noted that while geopolitical events, such as the conflict in Iran and the closing of the Strait of Hormuz, did initially cause a 10-15% increase in ticket prices across the industry, oil prices have since stabilized. He indicated that these rising energy costs impacted Delta's bottom line by nearly $2 billion, necessitating fare adjustments. "We had no choice," he said.

The Delta CEO suggested that government spending accountability and deregulation could also contribute to lowering ticket prices. He expressed optimism about recent progress in addressing infrastructure bottlenecks within the aviation sector, stating there has been more improvement in the last year and a half than in previous decades. "It’s that significant," he said.

Bastian also highlighted Delta's strengthened financial position, noting the airline has regained investment-grade ratings from major credit agencies and seen Berkshire Hathaway return as a top shareholder. He anticipates Delta will achieve a "fortress balance sheet" within the next couple of years, a significant accomplishment in the airline industry.

"We’re going to get to a point here in the next couple of years where our balance sheet will be a fortress balance sheet, something that’s never really happened in our industry to that point," Bastian said. "This is the industry that the US holds as the gold standard… So whether it’s Boeing, whether it’s our airlines, our aviation space, our technical prowess and know-how, we’re the gold standard."
