Del Taco Named Best Fast Food Restaurant in America, Surpassing In-N-Out

Del Taco has been recognized as the 'Best Fast Food Restaurant in America' in USA Today's Readers' Choice Awards, outranking well-known national chains and even surpassing its fellow California favorite, In-N-Out, which did not make the top 10.

The rankings were determined after USA Today editors and a panel of food experts nominated contenders, followed by a nationwide reader vote. Del Taco, a chain with over six decades of history, secured the top position with its diverse menu.

USA Today highlighted Del Taco's offering of "satisfying Mexican fare including burritos, quesadillas and nachos," alongside American staples like burgers and fries. The chain also provides a dedicated breakfast menu and options for vegetarians and vegans. Its crinkle-cut fries have also received acclaim, earning the top spot in USA Today's Best Fast Food Fries category for three consecutive years. Del Taco also received an award for 'Best Fast Food Breakfast' from USA Today this year.

Founded in California in the 1960s, Del Taco has grown to nearly 600 restaurants across 18 states, with a significant presence remaining in its home state. The chain was acquired by Jack in the Box in 2022 and subsequently sold in 2025 to franchise operator Yadav Enterprises.

Del Taco's appeal extends to its affordability, with items starting at $1 on its 'Get a Lot of Value' menu. Other popular chains such as Chick-fil-A, Wendy's, Raising Cane's, and McDonald's were listed lower in the rankings. A&W was named the second-best chain.

Notably absent from the top rankings was In-N-Out, another California-founded chain established in 1948. While In-N-Out is known for its streamlined menu, fresh ingredients, and a cult following, its predominantly West Coast presence may have impacted its national ranking. In-N-Out has been expanding its corporate presence in Tennessee, a move that has led to speculation about potential East Coast expansion, though company officials have stated this does not affect California operations.
