Dealers Offer Significant New Car Discounts as Half-Year Targets Loom
Buyers can secure substantial savings, but sales professionals aim to retain an average of £1,000 per sale through negotiation.
Motor dealers are intensifying efforts to meet half-year sales targets, leading to significant discounts on new vehicles available through June 30. Market experts note that showrooms under pressure to reach quotas typically offer more generous savings, including deposit contributions and reduced finance rates, to drive sales.
The period leading up to the end of the second quarter is crucial for dealers, as the opportunity for substantial price reductions may diminish with the start of the third quarter and the lead-up to September's new registration plate, a time when demand typically surges.
However, even with the pressure to finalize sales, dealers often aim to retain an average of £1,000 from the maximum possible discount, a phenomenon known as the 'Discount Gap.' This gap represents the difference between the 'best price' a dealer initially offers and the price a well-informed buyer can potentially negotiate. Insider Car Deals, a market analysis firm, tracks this gap by mystery shopping dealerships.
According to Insider Car Deals, their research uncovered an average discount gap of £1,049 across ten popular models. These savings can be realized by buyers who are aware of the potential price floor and are willing to negotiate.
