Costco to Open 10 New Warehouses Across Nine States This Summer
The bulk retailer is expanding its footprint with new locations opening between June and August, alongside upgrades to checkout technology.
Costco is set to open 10 new warehouses across nine U.S. states and one in Taiwan between June and August. This expansion follows a busy 2025, during which the company added 27 new stores, pushing its total U.S. store count beyond 640.
The new locations are slated for:
Syracuse, Utah – June 2026 Pensacola, Florida – June 2026 S Kaohsiung, Taiwan – July 2026 Albany, New York – August 2026 Oconomowoc, Wisconsin – August 2026 Otsego, Minnesota – August 2026 Mansfield, Texas – August 2026 Celina, Texas – August 2026 Stone Mountain, Georgia – August 2026 Lee’s Summit, Missouri – August 2026
In addition to physical expansion, Costco is implementing new checkout technologies aimed at improving efficiency. CEO Ron Vachris announced during a May earnings call that the company is making "meaningful strides to deliver a more seamless and convenient experience for our members across the warehouse and online."
One such innovation is a new scanning system where employees pre-scan a shopper's cart while they are waiting in line. Once at the register, the membership card is scanned, and the previously scanned items appear on the screen for payment. According to Vachris, warehouses adopting this technology have seen checkout speed improvements of up to 20%, and overall U.S. warehouses achieved record checkout productivity in the final weeks of the recent quarter.
Costco is also testing a Scan & Pay feature through its app, allowing members to scan and pay for items directly on their phones, bypassing traditional checkout lines. This feature is comparable to a similar offering by rival Sam's Club. These technological updates come as Costco seeks to streamline the checkout process, which can currently result in wait times exceeding 20 minutes for customers.
