Consumers Face 'Proteinflation' as Protein Prices Soar

The cost of protein supplements has surged, a phenomenon some are calling 'proteinflation,' impacting consumers who rely on these products for fitness and recovery. While wholesale prices for whey protein have recently begun to stabilize, they remain significantly higher than in previous years.

Max, a consumer in his thirties, acknowledges the increased cost but believes protein remains essential. "It feels like protein is so important now, a lot more than it used to be. It's pushed out everywhere," he stated. "If you're doing exercise and not taking any, you feel like you wouldn't be recovering properly."

For students on tighter budgets, the situation is different. Evie, a university student, finds the current prices unsustainable. "It was affordable on my gap year [when she was working], but now I'm at university, I don't think I'll continue buying it. It's not a necessity right now," she explained.

Amanpreet Singh also plans to continue purchasing protein but views it as an increasingly expensive luxury. He mentioned that prices nearing £170 for a large bag are too high, leading him to switch to a cheaper brand for around £100. "it's becoming a luxury," he said.
