Comcast to Split NBCUniversal and Sky into Separate Company

Comcast announced Monday its intention to separate its media and technology businesses into two distinct publicly traded companies. This strategic move comes as the entertainment industry faces challenges from consumers shifting away from traditional television bundles towards streaming services.

The plan involves spinning off NBCUniversal and Sky into a standalone media company. The remaining Comcast business will focus on its broadband, wireless, and business services operations. The transaction is anticipated to be completed in approximately one year, pending regulatory and board approvals.

Comcast shareholders will hold stock in both newly formed companies upon the completion of the separation. The company stated it expects to maintain a stake of up to 19.9% in NBCUniversal for up to one year post-separation, with a plan to gradually monetize this holding.

Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts stated in a press release that the transaction is an "exciting day" for the company and is expected to foster a more entrepreneurial management approach and create new opportunities for each business.

Following the separation, Mike Cavanagh is slated to become CEO of NBCUniversal, while Michael Angelakis, former Comcast Chief Financial Officer, will return to lead Comcast as CEO. Investors reacted positively to the announcement, with Comcast shares rising as much as 26% in early trading.
