Comcast to Separate Media Assets, Including Sky and NBCUniversal, into New Entity

Comcast, the owner of Sky, is planning a significant corporate restructuring that will involve spinning off its extensive media assets into a new, separate company. This new entity will encompass the UK-based broadcaster Sky as well as NBCUniversal, which includes Universal Pictures, the NBC television network, Bravo, and theme parks.

Under the proposed plan, Comcast shareholders will retain ownership stakes in both the original Comcast, which will continue to focus on its mobile and broadband technology operations, and the newly formed media company. Comcast boss Brian Roberts described the move as "a very exciting day for our company."

The announcement comes as Comcast's shares saw a notable increase, jumping more than 7% in New York trading following a period where they had declined. This strategic separation aims to create distinct investment profiles for the technology and media divisions.

This move occurs amidst a broader period of transformation within the media and entertainment industry. Sky, known for producing popular shows such as the "Game of Thrones" prequel "House Of The Dragon," is reportedly nearing a £1.6 billion deal to acquire the broadcasting and streaming services of ITV. In parallel, the entertainment landscape is seeing other major developments, including the anticipated completion of the £80 billion takeover of Warner Bros by Paramount Skydance.
