Co-op Bank Slashes Overseas Fees, Undercuts Competitors on Perks Account

Co-op Bank has eliminated its 2.75 percent transaction fee on overseas debit card payments and cut the monthly cost of its Everyday Extra account from £19 to £12. This move positions the bank competitively, particularly for customers planning summer travel.

The Everyday Extra account includes worldwide family travel insurance, mobile phone protection, and UK and European breakdown cover. Banking experts note that the Co-op Bank's offering is competitive when compared to similar packaged accounts from other financial institutions.

For example, Chase charges £12.50 per month for its Protect account, and Monzo charges £17 per month for its Max account. High-street banks also offer bundled accounts, with Nationwide's FlexPlus costing £18 monthly and NatWest's Platinum Rewards account priced at £22 per month.

Kate Steere, a banking expert at comparison website Finder, highlighted that while packaged accounts require careful review of their terms, Co-op Bank's offering stands up to scrutiny. She noted that at £12 per month, it is less expensive than major competitors like Chase Protect and Monzo Max. The account provides comprehensive worldwide travel insurance, which covers partners when traveling with the account holder and children under 22 even when traveling independently. It also includes RAC breakdown cover for the UK and Europe.

Packaged accounts can be beneficial if they offer cost savings on bundled services or provide valued convenience. Travel insurance and breakdown cover are common features that appeal to frequent travelers. However, it is crucial for consumers to compare the specific protections offered by different accounts to avoid potential gaps. For instance, while Co-op Bank's travel insurance covers children traveling independently, it does not extend the same coverage to partners. Accounts like Nationwide's FlexPlus do offer this broader coverage for partners.

Co-op Bank is now part of Coventry Building Society, having been acquired by the society early last year.
