Citroen Revives Iconic 2CV Van for Electric Era

Citroen has unveiled a concept electric version of its classic 2CV Fourgonnette van, breathing new life into the iconic vehicle for a modern, electrified market. The concept, presented at the Paris Motor Show, draws inspiration from the original van that was a staple in rural France for decades. This follows the recent reveal of a reborn electric 2CV passenger car, slated for a 2028 release.

The 2CV Fourgonnette EV concept is described by Citroen as a "design study" and a "passion project," showcasing a potential future for electric commercial vehicles. The original van debuted in 1951, two years after the passenger car, and quickly became indispensable for farmers, tradespeople, and postal services in France. Its simple, dependable design and practical utility made it a recognizable sight for over a quarter of a century.

Citroen aims for the concept to embody the spirit of the original Fourgonnette, emphasizing its role as a simple, ingenious, and accessible tool for contemporary businesses and delivery drivers. "It was part of everyday life. Simple, ingenious and accessible, it above all possessed something few commercial vehicles have: a soul," said Xavier Chardon, CEO of Citroen. "That is the spirit we are bringing back to life today. Because being useful should never mean being ordinary."

The concept's front design mirrors the retro aesthetic of the upcoming electric 2CV car, featuring eye-shaped LED headlights and the signature two-chevron logo. However, the rear has been transformed into a tall van body, reminiscent of the original's corrugated steel structure, which provided rigidity and kept manufacturing costs low. This practical, box-like design allowed for the transport of various large and heavy items, contributing to its widespread popularity.

Over 1.2 million units of the original 2CV Fourgonnette were sold before production ceased in 1978. Citroen highlights the concept as a representation of how the electric 2CV could be adapted for professional use, clarifying that unlike the passenger car, it is not a direct preview of a future production model. Details regarding the electric powertrain for the concept van have not yet been released. The original van was equipped with small, air-cooled flat-twin engines, ranging from 375cc to 602cc. It became a cult icon, particularly favored by La Poste for its suspension and load-carrying capabilities in rural areas.
