Citroen Revives Iconic 2CV Van for Electric Era

Citroen has unveiled a concept electric version of its classic 2CV Fourgonnette van, a beloved vehicle that served rural France for decades. The retro-inspired commercial EV concept was revealed at the Paris Motor Show, shortly after the debut of a reborn 2CV passenger car concept slated for production in 2028.

While the passenger EV is intended for sale, Citroen describes the 2CV Fourgonnette EV concept as a 'design study' and 'passion project' that explores the potential of a future electric workhorse. The original 2CV Fourgonnette, launched in 1951, was designed for farmers, tradespeople, and postal services, becoming a staple of French life for over 25 years.

Today, restored examples of the original van are used by mobile catering businesses and coffee shops. Citroen aims for the concept to embody the original's qualities of being a simple, dependable tool for modern businesses and delivery drivers.

"The 2CV Fourgonnette was more than just a workhorse," said Xavier Chardon, CEO of Citroen. "It was part of everyday life. Simple, ingenious and accessible, it above all possessed something few commercial vehicles have: a soul. That is the spirit we are bringing back to life today. Because being useful should never mean being ordinary."

The concept's front design echoes the retro styling of the 2028 2CV car, featuring eye-shaped LED headlights, the distinctive two-chevron logo, and a creased bonnet. The rear of the concept features a tall van body, reminiscent of the original's corrugated steel structure, which provided rigidity, low manufacturing costs, and practical cargo space.

Over 1.2 million original 2CV Fourgonnettes were sold before production ceased in 1978, establishing it as one of the most recognizable small vans. Citroen has indicated that while the concept showcases how the electric 2CV could be adapted for professional use, it is not a direct preview of a future production model, unlike the passenger car.

Details regarding the electric powertrain for the Fourgonnette concept have not yet been released. The original van was powered by small, air-cooled flat-twin engines, ranging from 375cc to 602cc. The 2CV became a cult icon in post-war France, particularly favored by La Poste for its soft suspension and load-carrying capabilities in rural areas.
