Chipotle Offers $1 Million in Free Burritos for World Cup Final Puzzle
The fast-food chain is tying a giveaway to the World Cup Final, requiring fans to solve a visual riddle on Instagram.
Chipotle is celebrating the 2026 World Cup Final by offering customers $1 million worth of free entrees, with 100,000 free meals available. To claim one of these prizes, fans must successfully solve a visual puzzle that will be released on Chipotle's Instagram account during the game's second hydration break.
The promotion plays on a well-known customer habit of 'accidentally' filling complimentary water cups with lemonade. The fast-food chain will post a short video showing a lemonade-filled cup being shuffled among three identical water cups. Viewers who correctly identify the cup's location will receive a text code at the end of the clip. Texting this code to 888-222 will award the first 100,000 participants a free entrée, redeemable through July 24.
Chipotle has previously acknowledged and embraced this fan behavior through social media, and now it forms the centerpiece of this World Cup promotion. The company stated that "the best brand ideas start with a fan truth" and that the "water cup has become one of the most recognizable symbols in Chipotle fan culture." The emergence of hydration breaks in the World Cup matchday experience presented an opportunity to integrate this fan lore into a major sporting event.
This is not the first time Chipotle has playfully addressed customer habits. In 2023, the chain offered a car napkin holder for $30 in response to fans hoarding napkins, though it has since been removed from merchandise offerings. The company also recently reintroduced its Chipotle Honey Chicken in April and in March 2026 launched a new cilantro, lime, and jalapeño sauce, aiming to add freshness and cater to the demand for sauces among younger diners.
Chipotle operates over 4,000 locations across 49 states and is considered one of the largest Mexican-inspired fast-food chains. The company has been expanding its restaurant footprint, with CEO Scott Boatwright noting the addition of over 300 new restaurants and progress on operational initiatives in the past year.
