Chinese Hybrid SUV Achieves 828 Miles on Single Tank in UK Test
The Jaecoo 7 SHS-P, dubbed the 'Temu Range Rover', surpassed its advertised range in a real-world fuel economy test.
The Jaecoo 7 Super Hybrid System Plug-in (SHS-P), a Chinese hybrid SUV that has gained popularity in the UK, recently completed a real-world fuel economy test, covering 828 miles on a single tank of fuel and fully charged battery. This distance falls just 11 miles short of the journey between Land's End and John o' Groats, the extremities of Great Britain.
The Jaecoo 7 SHS-P, which is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an 18.3kWh battery offering up to 56 miles of EV-only range, surpassed its advertised range of 747 miles by 11.14 percent. The test was conducted in late June at UTAC Millbrook on a closed proving ground designed to simulate diverse driving conditions, including dual carriageways, motorways, and hilly country routes.
This vehicle is part of a wave of Chinese cars entering the UK market, noted for their affordable prices, extensive equipment, and advanced technology. The Jaecoo 7 SUV, which draws comparisons to the Range Rover Velar but is priced at around half the cost, has become a popular choice. It has been dubbed the 'Temu Range Rover' due to its stylistic similarities and significantly lower price point. The SHS-P variant costs £35,170, compared to the cheapest Range Rover Velar PHEV at £65,450.
Jaecoo's sister brand, Omoda, also participated in the test with its Omoda 7 SHS-P, covering 770 miles, which exceeded its claimed range of 700 miles by 10 percent. Both Jaecoo and Omoda are brands under the Chinese Chery Group.
Professionals Kevin Booker and Sam Clarke piloted the vehicles during the economy run. Booker noted that the challenge was undertaken during a heatwave with temperatures reaching 41C, emphasizing the vehicle's performance under demanding conditions. He stated that the journey demonstrated "what can be achieved in these cars" and that "with the right mindset and the right car, you really can achieve more while using less."
The Jaecoo 7 has been a consistent performer in the UK market since September 2025, frequently ranking among the top ten best-selling vehicles. In its first year on sale, it sold over 30,100 units to private buyers. For the first half of 2026, Omoda and Jaecoo combined recorded 52,828 vehicle registrations.
