Chili's Revives Retro Design to Enhance Dining Experience

Chili's is undertaking a nationwide restaurant renovation, aiming to recapture its classic appeal by reintroducing signature red booths, quirky artwork, and other design elements that were once hallmarks of the brand. The company intends to remodel approximately 10% of its nearly 1,200 domestic locations annually until all restaurants have been updated.

The redesign effort, guided by the principle of "Make Chili's More Chili's," draws inspiration from the chain's original Dallas location and the vibrant aesthetic of the 1990s. Chili's previously tested various design concepts in four Dallas-area restaurants, gathering customer feedback to refine the final package.

The first remodeled locations outside the test market reopened in July across eight cities, including Fayetteville, Arkansas; Monrovia, California; Kennesaw, Georgia; Lake Charles and Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Greensboro, North Carolina; Cookeville, Tennessee; and El Paso, Texas. Key changes include the return of the distinctive red booths, tile-inspired tabletops with Southwestern ceramic influences, and refreshed bar areas featuring neon signage and horseshoe-shaped layouts.

Guests will also encounter playful nods to the brand's history, such as framed sheet music from the baby back ribs jingle, the original 1975 menu, and custom wallpaper with whimsical scenes. The updated bars will prominently feature "Margarita Bar" signs, celebrating a signature drink for which Chili's sold nearly 30 million in 2025, reportedly more than any other restaurant brand.

This embrace of nostalgia follows similar strategies by other restaurant chains. Pizza Hut franchisees have reportedly seen success by reintroducing classic design elements like red roofs, vinyl booths, and vintage lighting, indicating a trend where retro aesthetics resonate with diners.
