Chili's Revives 90s Vibe with Retro Restaurant Redesign

Chili's is embarking on a nationwide restaurant redesign aimed at bringing back the chain's signature retro look from the 1990s. The overhaul focuses on reviving nostalgic elements such as iconic red booths, colorful Southwestern-inspired decor, and vibrant neon bar areas. The guiding principle behind the redesign is to "Make Chili's More Chili's," according to a company fact sheet.

The refreshed design draws inspiration from Chili's original Dallas location on Greenville Avenue and the chain's heyday aesthetic. Diners can expect to see the return of tile tabletops and horseshoe-shaped bar layouts, which will be larger and equipped with additional televisions. The bars will also feature prominent signage for a "Margarita Bar."

Subtle nods to the company's history are integrated into the design, including framed sheet music for the famous Baby Back Ribs jingle and the original 1975 menu. The wallpaper will feature unique designs such as tortilla-chip UFOs and margarita-filled swimming pools.

Before launching the nationwide initiative, Chili's tested several design concepts at four restaurants in the Dallas area to gather customer feedback. The first remodeled locations outside of Texas reopened on July 1 in various cities, including Fayetteville, Arkansas; Monrovia, California; Kennesaw, Georgia; Lake Charles and Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Greensboro, North Carolina; Cookeville, Tennessee; and El Paso, Texas.

Approximately 10% of Chili's roughly 1,200 U.S. locations are slated to receive this vintage-inspired transformation annually until the refresh is complete across the country. This renovation effort comes as Chili's continues to appeal to budget-conscious consumers by combining nostalgic charm with value-driven promotions.

Earlier this year, the chain gained attention for its social media commentary on fast-food pricing, highlighting its $10.99 "3 for Me" meal deal, which includes a sandwich, fries, chips and salsa, and a drink. The company is now betting that this embrace of nostalgia will be as effective as its value meals in attracting and retaining customers.
