Chicken Wing Prices Plummet, Offering Relief to Consumers and Restaurants

Chicken wing prices are on the decline, a welcome shift for consumers celebrating National Chicken Wing Day after years of soaring costs. Wholesale prices for whole wings have fallen from a year ago, and supply remains steady, according to a July market trend report.

This decrease in wholesale costs is attributed to U.S. meat-chicken producers boosting domestic production. Wells Fargo reported that producers increased output by 2.2% in 2025, supported by lower feed costs. The National Chicken Council (NCC) noted that factors such as improved hatchability and liveability in poultry have contributed to production exceeding earlier expectations.

Wholesale wing prices, which opened 2025 below $1.00 per pound, have seen a dramatic decrease of approximately 66% from their pandemic-era peak of over $3.20 per pound. While prices have strengthened slightly in recent weeks, they remain considerably lower than their historic highs, presenting a bargain for both restaurants and grocery retailers.

"When wing prices rise to unattractive levels for food service buyers, they tend to pull back on wing promotions and special price offerings," said Tom Super, senior vice president of public affairs for the NCC. "Then, as wing prices move to much more affordable levels, food service buyers, especially those dedicated to wings, jump back into marketing wings more aggressively."

This trend is likely to translate into more deals and specials for consumers. Kipper Greist, managing partner of Jumby Bay Island Grill, indicated that while menu prices are not adjusted frequently due to the cost of reprinting, restaurants often opt for specials to pass savings on. "We would rather offer specials like our 99-cent wings on Wednesdays and during football season," Greist said.

The NCC also highlights chicken wings as an affordable protein option, a factor that continues to resonate with consumers. "Consumers are continuing to value and appreciate wholesome protein in their foods," Super stated.

As prices become more favorable, restaurants are expected to promote wings more actively. This shift, combined with the enduring popularity of the dish, offers consumers an opportunity for more affordable gatherings. The versatility of chicken wings, whether as an appetizer or a meal, appeals to a broad range of preferences. Recent consumer trends also indicate a move towards less traditional flavors, with garlic Parmesan, Thai chili, and mango barbecue gaining popularity alongside classic options.

The origin of the chicken wing's popularity in the United States is often attributed to the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, which is credited with popularizing what was once a less desirable chicken part by deep-frying and saucing it.
