Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf Face Off as Affordable Electric Vehicle Options

The Chevrolet Bolt EV and Nissan Leaf remain key contenders in the quest for an affordable electric vehicle, each offering distinct advantages for budget-conscious consumers. A recent comparison by Edmunds pitted the redesigned 2026 Nissan Leaf against the newly returned 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV, both featuring starting prices around $30,000.

Range and Performance

The 2027 Bolt boasts an EPA-estimated range of 262 miles, suitable for daily commutes and occasional longer trips. The 2026 Leaf holds a slight edge with a maximum estimated range of 303 miles. In Edmunds' standardized real-world range tests, the Bolt achieved 290 miles while the Leaf covered 310 miles. Acceleration is comparable, with both vehicles reaching 60 mph in approximately 7 seconds. However, Edmunds noted the Bolt offers more agile handling, making it preferable for city driving, whereas the Leaf's ride can feel harsh over uneven surfaces. For public fast charging, the Bolt demonstrated a quicker ability to regain range.

Technology and Features

The Leaf appeals to tech-savvy buyers with its standard 12.3-inch touchscreen and an additional 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, with an option to upgrade both to 14.3 inches. It also offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Bolt features dual 11-inch displays and integrates Google Built-In, an Android-based operating system, allowing downloads of apps like Waze and Apple Music. While the Bolt lacks the direct smartphone integration of CarPlay and Android Auto, it offers an available Super Cruise feature for hands-free driving on compatible highways.

Interior Space and Utility

Both EVs share crossover-style designs with ample cabin space and headroom. The Bolt provides an additional 7.3 inches of rear legroom compared to the Leaf, which could be beneficial for families or those installing child safety seats. Conversely, the Leaf offers more cargo space behind the rear seats, with 20 cubic feet compared to the Bolt's 16.2 cubic feet. The Leaf also includes an underfloor storage system for smaller items.

Value and Pricing

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt LT has a starting price of $28,995, including destination fees, positioning it as one of the most affordable new EVs. It comes equipped with standard advanced driver aids like adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning. The Leaf S+ trim starts at $31,535, offering a similar suite of standard features and driver aids, plus a standard surround-view camera system. Higher trims elevate the price, with a fully loaded Leaf Platinum+ reaching around $40,000, while a loaded Bolt RS is approximately $37,500.

Edmunds concluded that both the Bolt and Leaf are strong choices for affordable EVs, achieving identical overall scores in their ratings. The Leaf is recommended for its longer range, superior technology, and larger cargo area, while the Bolt is favored for its better overall value and more responsive handling.
