Cheerios Embraces Resealable Packaging in Partnership with Ziploc

Cheerios, the well-known whole grain oat cereal from General Mills, has partnered with Ziploc to integrate resealable bag technology into its packaging. This collaboration introduces Ziploc's PantrySeal feature, designed to create a pour spout and a secure zip closure, aiming to eliminate issues with stale cereal and reduce spills. The new packaging is now available exclusively on Walmart.com.

This innovation addresses a common consumer frustration. Both Cheerios and Ziploc have reported receiving numerous requests over the years from customers seeking a better solution for keeping cereal fresh. According to a December 2025 survey by consumer insights platform Suzy, 90 percent of cereal consumers use supplementary methods like clips, containers, or clothespins to maintain cereal freshness.

Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills, stated that the collaboration is intended to simplify consumers' daily routines. "Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for, making the whole routine easier and more enjoyable," Knox said in a statement. A Ziploc representative echoed this sentiment, highlighting the integration of their resealable freshness expertise directly into the Cheerios package.

The initial rollout includes Cheerios and Honey-Nut Cheerios varieties and is exclusive to Walmart.com. General Mills plans to expand availability to other retailers nationwide in the coming months. The new packaging aims to keep the cereal fresher for longer periods, a change that social media commentary suggests has been anticipated by many consumers for years. Online reactions often express a sentiment that this was an overdue, yet welcome, development for cereal packaging.
